Wareham Man Seriously Hurt In Bourne Ice Cream Truck Crash

BOURNE (CBS) -- A 33-year-old Wareham man was seriously hurt when the ice cream truck he was driving struck a utility pole in Bourne on Saturday afternoon.

Bourne police and firefighters, as well as Massachusetts State Police, were called to Scenic Highway in Bournedale Village about 2:10 p.m. Bourne police tweeted that one lane was closed from Herring Run to Church Lane following the accident.

Fire officials say the man was ejected from a Perry's Last Stand truck from Wareham. The truck had been traveling in the westbound lane before the crash.

A MedFlight was requested but it would have taken about 45 minutes to land, so the man was taken by ambulance to Rhode Island Hospital Trauma Center instead. He suffered life-threatening injuries and is in critical condition.

The pole was badly damaged and there was an electrical hazard in the area. It was split and ended up catching fire.

Eversource was called to the scene and is handling the repair work.

There were an estimated 250 power outages in the Herring Run area including Little Sandy Pond Road and Roxy Cahoon Road.

As of 9 p.m., all lanes were open, police say.

David Curran of SatelliteNewsService.com captured video at the crash site.
