Several Hospitalized After Apparent 'Chemical Suicide' In Lowell

LOWELL (CBS) -- A possible chemical suicide in Lowell sent multiple people, including at least six first responders, to the hospital on Thursday.

Lowell police and the state fire marshal said they are investigating a suspicious death involving hazardous materials at a residence on Rock Street.

"Early indications are the death may be a suicide involving a male who has been the subject of domestic issues," police said.

Four officers trying to rescue the man were exposed to chemical gases and have been hospitalized for possible respiratory issues. A paramedic and two EMTs were also taken to the hospital.

Additionally, four residents in the building are being examined at a hospital, but police said it doesn't appear they were exposed.

"The scene is contained and there does not appear to be any further threat to the public," police said.
