Phantom Gourmet: New Deal Fruit In Revere

REVERE (CBS) -- There's a place in Revere called New Deal Fruit, but every single thing about it is decidedly old school.

"This is my brother Nicholas. This is my brother Domenic. And I'm Yano. Welcome to New Deal Fruit."

The Petruzzelli family has owned New Deal Fruit for more than 50 years, and it's always been the spot for the freshest, juiciest fruit you'll ever eat.

"Is that the finest looking grapefruit you've ever seen in your whole life?"

But there's plenty more than produce, like pastas, and groceries, and most importantly, an incredible deli serving up guaranteed great sandwiches.

"You're gonna get the best sandwich you're gonna buy anywhere you can get a sandwich. I challenge anybody to try to make a sandwich half as good as I can make one," Petruzzelli said.

The New Deal's subs are big, beautiful, and always sliced, stacked, and served to order.

Some are sort of standard, layered with cold cuts and cheeses.

Others are completely outrageous, topped with French Fries and Onion Rings.

And all of them are always oversized.

"All my sandwiches are all two handers. You don't eat with one hand and think you're gonna drive down the street," Petruzzelli said.

Out of all the sandwiches they make here, no sub satisfies like the Top Shelf because this thing is like a gourmet journey through Italian cold cut heaven.

"The Top Shelf is this whole top shelf right here, hence the name Top Shelf, three slices of everything on that top inside one big giant sandwich."

Because the New Deal has been around so long, and serves such great sandwiches, they've developed some very loyal customers. In fact, many regulars stop in daily, and when they don't, Dom gets worried.

"Yeah, there's people that don't come in for three days, you got to go check on them. Sometimes when you check on them, it's not good news. Sometimes it's, you know, they're full, they didn't feel like eating anymore, they had a Top Shelf, and they're like 'hey, I can't eat for three days, cuz I had enough," Petruzzelli said.
