Mike Sherman Named Head Football Coach At Nauset Regional

BOSTON (CBS) -- A local high school is getting a big-name head coach to roam their sidelines.

Mike Sherman, who made his name as a head coach with the Green Bay Packers in the NFL and then in the college ranks at Texas A&M, has been named the new head football coach at Nauset Regional in North Eastham.

The 60-year-old Sherman most recently served as offensive coordinator of the Miami Dolphins, but was let go in 2013 after two seasons on the job. He spent the last year on Cape Cod, where he previously spent summers and now calls home, and after doing occasional consulting work in the pros and college last year, is excited for his new coaching gig.

Sherman had other coaching offers but chose Nauset, excited to coach and teach high kids about the game he loves.

"I guess I'd say, why not? I've been fortunate financially over the years, which is allowing me to do this. Back in January I was looking for a place to have a football camp this summer and Nauset High School came up. Then I heard they were looking for a head football coach," Sherman told The Cape Cod Times.

"It took me a while to pull the trigger," he explained. "It hasn't been an easy decision because I wanted to make sure I was all 100 percent in. The kids deserve that from their coach. I've loved coaching in the NFL and college for the last 33 years, but I am definitely looking forward to working with the kids at Nauset.

"I have always admired high school coaches who give their time to their players. They have a chance to impact young lives," he said. "That is exciting and I'm looking forward to having an effect on these kids' lives."

Sherman will meet his new players later this week, and will hold a camp for skill position players later this month. He replaces athletic director Keith Kenyon, who stepped down as head coach last season after five years on the job. Kenyon will now become an assistant principal at the school.

In six years with the Packers, Sherman compiled a 57-39 record in the regular season while going 2-4 in the playoffs. He went 25-25 at Texas A&M, going 0-2 in Bowl games.
