State Trooper Helps Deliver Baby Boy On Mass Pike
BOSTON (CBS) - A State Police trooper helped a Fitchburg woman give birth to a baby boy on the Massachusetts Turnpike Interstate 90 eastbound in Framingham on Saturday night.
Troopers got the call shortly before 8 p.m. about a woman going into labor.
Troopers Paul Copponi, Daniel Mahoney, and the Framingham Fire/EMS Department were called to the scene. When Copponi arrived, he found the woman in the driver's seat, car still in drive, as the woman was breathing heavily. Three other children were in the vehicle at the time.
Copponi put the vehicle in park and helped the woman by calming her down and reassuring her that EMS was on the way. At that point, she began to crown, police say.
He cradled the baby's head, while Mahoney cared for the three other children.
While Trooper Copponi supported the baby as it was being delivered, Framingham Fire/EMS arrived on the scene.
The baby was born moments later.
A member of Framingham EMS cut the umbilical cord and put the infant, mother and children in the ambulance.
They were all taken to Metro West Framingham Hospital.
