Brookline Votes Overwhelmingly Against Boston 2024 Olympics

BROOKLINE, Mass. (AP) — Brookline wants nothing to do with Boston's bid to bring the 2024 Summer Olympics to the city.

Residents of the Boston suburb voted 111-46 Thursday in a non-binding referendum to oppose the bid.

Town meeting members said that Brookline was never consulted about hosting the Olympics before Boston 2024 submitted its bid to the United States Olympic Committee last year.

Brookline Board of Selectman Chairman Neil Wishinsky and fellow selectmen are worried taxpayers could become saddled with costs and are concerned with how traffic and public transit will be handled.

No representative of Boston 2024 spoke at Thursday's meeting, but a letter from the bid committee was handed out asking residents to hold off on a vote until a revised plan to bring the Olympics to Boston is released June 30.
