Justin Masterson Headed To The Disabled List

BOSTON (CBS) -  Justin Masterson was hit hard again on Tuesday night in Oakland, lasting just 2.2 innings against the A's and allowing six earned runs off six hits.

The 30-year-old right hander fell to 2-2 and watched his ERA skyrocket to 6.37 with the loss.

After the game manager John Farrell told reporters that something is "clearly not right" with the pitcher, and on Wednesday afternoon Farrell did something about it.

Masterson is heading to the disabled list with arm fatigue. The Boston Globe's Pete Abraham expects Steven Wright to get Masterson's scheduled start on Sunday in Seattle.

Abraham adds that Masterson was not pleased with the decision, but understands why it was made based on his last two outings, where he's allowed 10 earned runs in just 6.2 innings

Masterson was originally drafted by the Red Sox in the second round of the 2006 draft. He made 67 appearances for Boston in 2008 and '09 before being traded to Cleveland in a deal that sent Victor Martinez to the Red Sox.

An All-Star in 2013, Masterson compiled a 48-61 record and 4.23 ERA in 164 appearances for the Indians.

Last year, he was traded to St. Louis at the trade deadline, and he went 3-3 with a 7.04 ERA in nine appearances (six starts) down the stretch for the Cardinals.

Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington signed Masterson to a one-year $9.5 million contract in December.
