Families Seeking Answers Sue In Bridgewater Day Care Child Rape Case
BOSTON (CBS) -- Families whose children attended a Bridgewater State University day care center, which has come under scrutiny because of child rape allegations, are suing the school to get more information.
Attorney Carmen Durso said in a press conference Monday that his clients need answers. In April, Bridgewater State Children's Center student employee Kyle Loughlin was charged with raping two young boys in his care.
Since then, the director has also been charged for not reporting suspicions, and the center was closed and then reopened.
A 28-year-old mother who spoke at Monday's press conference wants to know if her two children may also have been affected. She said they are exhibiting symptoms of abuse.
"We want to know what happened, who was involved in withholding information and simply what days Kyle was working," she said. "Being unable to get any answers and conflicting information only adds to our duress.
Durso said the situation has been confusing, and one of the first things his firm did was find professionals who could tell these parents how they should talk to their kids about what's going on.
"We're talking about children who largely aren't sufficiently developed or sufficiently verbal to understand what has happened to them," he told WBZ NewsRadio 1030. "It doesn't compute in their world."
Durso said families are frustrated by the inability to get answers from the university, which is why they're filing the lawsuit to force the school to provide information.
Bridgewater State has received the request for emails and says it will cost the families $60,000 to comply with the public records request.
The lawsuit does not seek monetary damages, Durso said.
