Westwood Girl Seriously Hurt After Falling Off 20-Foot Ledge

WESTWOOD (CBS) - Police say a 16-year-old girl was seriously injured after she fell off a 20-foot ledge in the woods near a condominium complex late Friday night in Westwood.

Officers were called for a report of loud noises coming from the woods near the High Street complex. They walked a few hundred feet into the woods and found a large group of teens drinking by a bonfire.

After police identified themselves and told the teens not to run away, some stayed put while others ran from the area.

Some officers used thermal cameras to search the woods.

Police and fire officers found the girl who suffered a serious head injury after apparently falling off a rocky ledge.

She was wedged between two boulders in a steep area, and it took 10 officers about 20 minutes to treat, stabilize and remove the girl from the woods.

The girl had not been drinking, police say, adding that they are unsure if she had been running before falling from the cliff. She was taken to a Boston hospital after seriously hurting her head.

"When anyone from our town is hurt, we all hurt and our thoughts and attention are with this young lady and her family hoping she makes a fast and full recovery," said police chief Jeffrey Silva in a press statement.

Police won't be releasing her name.

Another teen suffered minor injuries after an aerosol can exploded after it had been thrown into the fire by one of the kids before police arrived on scene.

Several other teens were checked out by EMS to make sure they had not suffered alcohol poisoning.

Teens were released to their parents. Nobody was arrested.
