Trooper Spots Suicidal Woman On Day He Received Award For Similar Save

GLOUCESTER (CBS) – The same day he received a commendation for saving a suicidal woman, a Massachusetts State Police trooper rescued another woman who was considering jumping from the Gloucester bridge the first incident took place.

State Police said Trooper Donald Twombly received a "Division Commanders Commendation" on Thursday for his actions on October 23, 2014.

That day he noticed a woman walking on Route 128 in Gloucester near the bridge that travels over the Annisquam River. Twombly convinced the woman to seek help rather than jump off the bridge, police said.

On Thursday while off duty after receiving his commendation, Twombly was driving near the same bridge when he saw another woman apparently contemplating suicide.

According to police, the woman was already on the river side of the fence.

Twombly notified state police barracks in Danvers. Gloucester officers were able to arrive and hold onto the woman until she could be secured and safely brought down from the bridge.

"The State Police commend Trooper Twombly for his observations again, and quick thinking, that certainly contributed to the results of this incident," police said.

"Had Trooper Twombly not noticed this woman, the results could have been quite different. Also, thank you to the Gloucester Police for responding to the scene and assisting with the safe recovery of the woman."
