Red Sox Name Carl Willis New Pitching Coach
BOSTON (CBS) - The Boston Red Sox announced Saturday that Carl Willis will be the team's new pitching coach.
Willis takes over the role formerly held by Juan Nieves, who was fired on Thursday.
He will join the team for their final game of a three-game series with the Toronto Blue Jays.
Boston will be getting a pitching coach with 11 years experience in that position. He previously coached with the Cleveland Indians (2003-2009) and the Seattle Mariners from August 2010 to 2013.
This season, he had been serving as the pitching coach for the Indian's Triple-A squad, the Columbus Clippers, before joining the Red Sox.
Willis also pitched in the majors, compiling a 22-16 record, 13 saves and a 4.25 earned run average in 390 innings pitched in 267 games.
He pitched for the Detroit Tigers (1984), Cincinnati Reds (1984-1986), Chicago White Sox (1988) and the Minnesota Twins from 1991 to 1995.
