Ryan said that the case is an "active investigation of a homicide" after remains were found on Loughery Way in the area of Binney and 6th Streets.

Police are investigating two separate areas; Loughery Way, a pedestrian-only walkway, and an apartment complex on 6th Street.

More than a dozen investigators were could be seen at the Loughery Way site during the day. A witness told WBZ-TV's Julie Loncich that the bag was large and looked similar to a hockey bag.

A medical examiner's van pulled up to the apartment building and unloaded a gurney Saturday afternoon.

Massachusetts State Police removed several boxes and bags of evidence from the site, located near biotech firm, Biogen, in Kendall Square.

The Cambridge Police Department and State Police are joining Ryan's office in its investigation of the murder.

According to Ryan, the body was found Saturday morning. Authorities believe there is only one victim, but won't know for sure until an autopsy is complete.

Officials later confirmed they found additional human remains inside a common area of 6th Street.

Late into the night, investigators could be seen taking pictures inside a third floor unit of this Cambridge apartment building.

"I would never have expected something like this," said Olivia Hentz, who lives at the complex.

Commissioner Robert Haas/Cambridge Police says "We want to reassure the individuals living in the apartment that they are safe."

The district attorney says surveillance video lead authorities to the building, less than a block away from their initial investigation.
