Uehara, Kelly To Start Season On DL For Red Sox

BOSTON (CBS) -- The Boston Red Sox will be without their closer and No. 5 starter when the season begins on Monday.

Koji Uehara and Joe Kelly will both begin the 2015 season on the disabled list, the team announced on Friday.

Uehara, who turned 40 on Friday, has been battling a hamstring injury for much of Spring Training. Edward Mujica will start the season as Boston's closer with Uehara on the shelf.

Kelly suffered a biceps injury earlier this spring, but could be activated in time to start Boston's fifth game of the season: April 11 in New York against the Yankees.

The team also announced that Robbie Ross (2.45 ERA in seven spring appearances) and Steven Wright (3-0, 2.60 ERA this spring) have made the Opening Day roster and will pitch out of the bullpen. Both Matt Barnes and Brandon Workman were optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket on Friday, where Barnes will be a starter and Workman will pitch out of the bullpen.

The Red Sox open the 2015 season on Monday against the Phillies in Philadelphia.
