Baker Looking Forward To Panel's Report On MBTA

BOSTON (AP) — Gov. Charlie Baker is expecting big things from a special commission he appointed to look into the Boston area's beleaguered public transit system.

Baker named the panel of national transit experts in February to examine the root problems facing the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority. The MBTA was plagued by massive breakdowns during a record-setting stretch of winter storms.

The governor on Thursday did not provide any preview of the commission's report — expected within a couple of weeks — but said it would be a "seminal document" as policy makers debate how to fix the T.

Baker says he wants to focus on managerial and operational improvements before any consideration is given to new taxes or fare hikes to raise revenue for the system.
