Seal Pup Found Entangled On Beach Making Progress

NANTUCKET (CBS) -- A stranded seal pup is recovering after it was found on a Nantucket beach with rope wrapped around its neck.

A beachgoer at Nobadeer Beach found the entangled seal about 30 yards from the water on Wednesday. Environmental police said Sgt. Keith Robinson responded and was able to remove a type of nylon rope that was wrapped very tight around the seal pup's neck.

Police left the seal to see if it would return to the ocean, but decided to transport it to the National Marine Life Center in Buzzards Bay when it still hadn't moved from the same spot on Friday.

Marine biologists gave the seal pup fluids for dehydration and treated it for a minor wound inflicted by the rope. It appears that the seal grew into the line, police said.

Environmental police say the prognosis is good for the seal.

"Sgt. Robinson received word from the National Marine Life Center that the seal pup has responded favorably to rehabilitation measures and the progress that has been made is encouraging," police said.
