Reiss: 'High Stakes Poker' Between Patriots, Revis

BOSTON (CBS) -- With Devin McCourty and the Patriots agreeing to a new deal Sunday night, all eyes now shift to Darrelle Revis.

The Patriots have to decide by Tuesday whether or not they want to keep Revis on his contract, which will pay him $20 million (all guaranteed with a $25 million cap hit) for 2015. The thought is that they'll release the corner from that deal in the hopes of working out a long-term contract, but if Revis hits the market, other teams will come lining up to try and pry him away from the defending Super Bowl champs.

Neither side is saying anything about the impending situation, prompting ESPNBoston.com's Mike Reiss to call this a high stakes poker match between the two.

"What's fascinating with me is that Pro Football Talk reported that the sides hadn't even spoken about a contract as of Friday night. To me, it's the poker match," Reiss said on WBZ-TV's Sports Final on Sunday night. "This is high stakes poker between an organization in the Patriots, that is as good as it gets in terms of using leverage in its favor, and a player who is really the Patriots of player negotiations. Revis is not tipping his hand, and we're just waiting for the next domino to fall."

Reiss isn't sure what the market is like for Revis, just that it will likely come down to the Patriots and Jets in the end. And if that's the case, the Patriots should expect to pay top dollar to retain the All Pro cornerback.

"It's going to have to be a top of the market deal if they want to keep him," said Reiss. "That's going to be $14 million a year -- maybe $15 or $16 million per year, and who knows, it could be north of that. If the Jets come in higher, I think it could be tough to retain Revis if you're the Patriots. This is one of those situations where it's a big-time player, so it's going to take big-time money to keep him."
