Daily Talker: Steeper Shoveling Fines

In the midst of a historic winter in Boston, Mayor Marty Walsh is looking to crack down on people who are shoveling snow onto streets and those who fail to shovel sidewalks.

Right now, the current maximum fine is $300 but Walsh wants to increase the penalty to a $1,500.  The mayor has filed paperwork with the city clerk's office and city council is expected to take up the topic at its weekly meeting Wednesday night.

The Boston Globe reports the city has issued more than 4,000 fines to residents or businesses for violating the city's ordinances on snow and ice removal.  Walsh has been particularly frustrated by residents who throw snow onto freshly plowed streets.

But many people argue they have simply run out of room to put the snow and don't think higher penalties are necessary.

What do you think of the mayor's proposal to increase the fine for failing to shovel to $1,500?
