Curt Schilling Lashes Out At Cyberbullies Targeting His Daughter

BOSTON (CBS) -- Former Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling is going after Internet bullies who harassed and threatened his daughter over Twitter.

Schilling wrote on his blog that this all started Wednesday when he posted a tweet congratulating his daughter, Gabby Schilling, for being accepted to Salve Regina University in Rhode Island, where she will play softball.

"And tweets with the word rape, bloody underwear and pretty much every other vulgar and defiling word you could likely fathom began to follow," Schilling said.

Schilling wrote that he expected to get some smart-aleck replies from "guys being dopes and saying what guys say," but couldn't believe the graphic nature of some of the tweets.

"This stuff? This is so far off the radar it's pathetic," Schilling said.

The incident has left his daughter "beyond upset."

"She didn't do anything, she never said anything, yet she's now receiving personal messages with guys saying things to her, well let's just say I can't repeat and I'm getting beyond angry thinking about it," Schilling said.

The former pitcher identified two of the offensive tweeters as New Jersey college students, and invited others to figure out who else is behind the tweets and "have at it." He also noted that the younger generation fails to realize that what they post on the web can follow them for the rest of their lives.

"It truly is time this stopped," Schilling wrote, in addition to posting links to stories about young people who committed suicide after being cyberbullied.

On Monday, at least one of the Twitter users involved saw consequences.

Brookdale Community College in New Jersey said it suspended a student for their social media comments about Schilling's daughter, and a disciplinary hearing has been scheduled.

"The Twitter comments posted by this student are unacceptable and clearly violate the standards of conduct that are expected of all Brookdale students," the school wrote on Facebook. "Our sincerest apologies to Gabby Schilling. Her achievement should be celebrated and not clouded by offensive comments."

Schilling apologized to his daughter for any potential embarrassment, but said he'll never be shy about defending her in public.

Gabby Schilling took to social media Sunday to show her appreciation.

"don't know what i would do without you, i love you so much!!" she tweeted at her father.
