Walsh: Stay Off Boston Roads Through Tuesday

BOSTON (CBS) -- Mayor Marty Walsh is asking people to stay off the roads in Boston through Tuesday as the city tries to clear out record levels of snow.

The city's snow emergency and parking ban is expected to continue at least until Tuesday night, Walsh said. Up to two feet of snow is expected in Boston from the latest snowstorm.

The mayor is asking employers to let workers stay home Tuesday. Schools in Boston will also be closed Tuesday.

"We are preparing for a major removal of snow starting tomorrow," Walsh said. "I'm asking everyone to stay off the roads tomorrow."

There are 600 pieces of equipment clearing snow in the city, and crews have melted about 6,000 truckloads of snow, Walsh said.

The mayor has appealed to colleges, businesses and hospitals to help remove snow from crosswalks and roads.

"This is snow like we've never seen before in the past," Walsh said. "It's frustrating to all of us, but I ask you this: remain patient."

Walsh estimated that about 2,000 citations have been issued for people not removing snow from their property.

All city sponsored-community meetings are canceled Monday and Tuesday, Walsh said.
