Quincy ER To Stay Open 2 Years After Hospital Closing

BOSTON (AP) -- The owners of the former Quincy Medical Center have reached an agreement with the state attorney general to continue emergency health care services for up to two years.

Steward Health Care closed the 124-year-old hospital last month, saying it was losing $20 million a year.

Steward had previously agreed to keep the hospital's emergency room open for one year. Under the agreement announced Wednesday by Attorney General Martha Coakley, emergency care would be maintained for another year unless Steward can show that the services were not being utilized enough to warrant continuation.

The deal also requires Steward to relocate a Veterans Affairs outpatient clinic that had operated at the hospital.

Coakley, who ran unsuccessfully for governor, leaves office next week.
