Thieves Smash Display Case, Steal Rolex Watches At Chestnut Hill Mall

NEWTON (CBS) - Tens of thousands of dollars' worth of jewelry was stolen from a Newton store on Monday.

It happened at the Sidney Thomas store inside the Chestnut Hill Mall in the middle of the day. Two thieves rushed into the store and armed with a hammer, started smashing a glass case that held expensive Rolex watches.

Surveillance images show a man in a red sweatshirt with a hammer run in the store. The next picture shows his accomplice in a dark sweatshirt reaching into the case.

Across the mall, two employees of a clothing store heard the glass shatter.

"We heard a big bang and the customer looked at me and said 'was that a gunshot?' and I said 'no that's impossible,'" Tslila Goldstein said. "And then we saw a guy from the jewelry store running and chasing someone."

With their pockets full of Rolex watches, the thieves took off through the mall. They left the mall in a car that had been stolen in Watertown and dumped it in the parking lot of a nearby temple.

Police say the suspects are both black males and about 20 years old.
