Report: Patriots Sign Brandon Bolden To 2-Year Extension

BOSTON (CBS) - There's no snow in the forecast, but that hasn't stopped the Patriots from making a flurry of transactions Friday morning.

Just minutes after safety Patrick Chung's contract extension was reported, ESPN's Field Yates also broke the news that New England extended running back Brandon Bolden as well. It's a two-year, $2.32 million extension through 2016.

"Running back" may be a bit of a misnomer for Bolden, who's mainly a key special teams contributor. But in his three seasons with New England, Bolden has shown the ability to step up in the backfield when someone goes down.

Bolden went undrafted in 2012 after spending four seasons in college at Ole Miss. The third-year pro has just 634 yards in his NFL career, but averages a stellar 4.6 yards per carry and, as previously stated, plays a huge role in the kicking game.

Bolden's blocked punt in Week 14 against San Diego was a pivotal moment in the game, the final contest in what was called New England's six-game gauntlet. New England won that game 23-14.

Bolden's Patriots hope to advance to the AFC Championship game, but first they'll have to defeat the Baltimore Ravens on Saturday.
