$500 Reward Offered In Whitman Headstone Vandalism Probe
WHITMAN (CBS/AP) – A $500 reward was offered Monday for information leading to an arrest in the desecration of a cemetery in Whitman.
Over the weekend, someone knocked over and damaged 67 headstones at the Colebrook Cemetery on Essex Street.
One belonged to the family of a World War II Medal of Honor winner.
The damage, estimated in the thousands of dollars, was discovered Sunday morning.
No fingerprints were found on the gravestones due to the wet weather.
Police Chief Scott Benton said some of the gravestones are more than 150 years old and irreplaceable.
Among the damaged gravestones is that of the family of Army 1st Lt. John R. Fox, who posthumously received the Medal of Honor in 1997 for his actions during World War II.
The International Brotherhood of Police Officers Local 509 - Whitman Police Union offered the $500 reward Monday.
