Phantom Gourmet: Salted Caramel Chocolate Taste Test

BOSTON (CBS) -- Phantom recently purchased four brands of salted caramel chocolates from a local supermarket. The indulgent contenders were Dove, Ghirardelli, Godiva, and Lindt.

Each one scored well in Phantom's taste test, because, let's face it, they're chocolate. But still, only one of these treats could end up at the top of the food chain.

Godiva finished in last place. These milk chocolate salted toffee caramels were the most expensive by far. They're soft, chewy, and oh so buttery, but Phantom found the chocolate and salt side of the equation a little lacking. On the upside, at just 40 calories a piece, Godiva almost feels guilt free.

Next up was Dove. As soon as Phantom ripped open the bag, he was overwhelmed by this brand's intoxicating aroma. These foil-wrapped, bite-sized beauties feature a thick layer of dark chocolate stuffed with just not enough sea salt caramel filling. But if chocolate is your thing, this is your brand, as Dove's deep dark blend definitely delivers. Plus, as an added bonus, there are inspirational messages printed on the inside of each foil wrapper.

The runner up is Lindt. Instead of individual pieces, this brand comes in with a big bar and even bigger flavors. Each rich dark chocolate square is infused with hand-harvested sea salt crystals and pieces of sweet crunchy caramel, imparting wonderful texture in every bite. The biggest problem Phantom had with Lindt was trying not to eat the entire bar in one sitting.

At the top of the food chain is Ghirardelli. Like a well-trained orchestra, this brand hits all the right notes. Each individually wrapped square boasts deep dark chocolate that oozes with smooth salty caramel in every satisfying bite. It's rich, it's luscious, it's salty, it's sweet, and it's just about perfect. That's why Ghirardelli dark chocolate and sea salt caramel is at the top of the food chain.
