Elliotte Friedman: 2015 NHL Salary Cap Uncertainty Making Teams Leery Of Trading
BOSTON (CBS) - We know that general manager Peter Chiarelli has been very busy in recent weeks, scouting players and working the phones to try and swing a deal to improve his team.
But it takes two (sometimes three) to tango, and so far the B's have come up empty in the trade market; it will remain that way through December 27th, when the NHL holiday roster freeze is over.
Elliotte Friedman of Hockey Night In Canada joined 98.5 The Sports Hub's Adam Jones to discuss the latest trade rumors surrounding the Boston Bruins.
"Peter Chiarelli has worked quite hard at [trading]. I think he's been one of the more active guys out there, looking at things and trying to plan things that he can do," Friedman said Monday night.
With Reilly Smith, Torey Krug and Dougie Hamilton all free agents this coming offseason, the Bruins obviously have some important contracts they need to get done.
But that, coupled with the salary cap uncertainty next season and teams' willingness to deal, making a trade at the moment is proving to be very difficult.
"I don't think it's very easy. Don't forget, the Bruins have some business they have to take care of. Teams are really unsure of where the salary cap is going to be next year. There's an estimate, but that's all it is," said Friedman. "When you don't know where the cap is it's a dangerous thing. You look at what happened to Boston this year, you don't want that to happen again. I think all of that has kind of thrown a lot of uncertainty over the situation, not only in Boston but other teams too."
