Ryan Allen Named AFC Special Teams Player Of The Week

BOSTON (CBS) -- Another week, another award for a member of the New England Patriots.

This time it's punter Ryan Allen, who was named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week on Wednesday for his performance in Sunday's 23-14 victory by New England over the San Diego Chargers. It is the first time in Allen's career that he has received an AFC Player of the Week Honor.

Allen punted five times for 247 yards (49.4 average) and placed four of his punts at or inside the Chargers' 13-yard line. He placed punts at the 13, 10, 11 and 10-yard lines on each of his first four punts, helping to limit San Diego's average drive start to their own 17-yard line.

Allen, whose longest punt covered 60 yards, and the Patriots' coverage unit yielded only two punt returns for seven yards.

This marks the fifth AFC Player of the Week award for the Patriots in 2014. Chandler Jones was named AFC Defensive Player of the Week for his Week 2 performance in Minnesota, Chris Jones was named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week following a Week 7 win over the New York Jets, Julian Edelman was named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week following Week 9's win over the Denver Broncos and Jonas Gray was named AFC Offensive Player of the Week after rushing for 201 yards at Indianapolis in Week 11.

In addition, quarterback Tom Brady earned AFC Offensive Player of the Month honors for October.
