Rain Snarls Evening Commute With Local Flooding

BOSTON (CBS/AP) — A coastal storm caused travel headaches for Massachusetts commuters Tuesday evening.

Roads flooded Monday in eastern Massachusetts after as much as 3 inches of rain that also affected MBTA service in the Boston area.

Green Line passengers were being bused between Kenmore and Fenway because of a one-foot rise on the Muddy River. Some commuter rail service was also delayed by track flooding, and a retaining wall collapse in Belmont west of Boston.

MBTA Spokesman Joe Pesaturo says sandbags were placed to protect the Green Line tunnel east of Fenway, and crews worked to clear debris on the Belmont track.

In Topsfield, the heavy rain caused a mudslide that forced police to close Route 1 in both directions for hours. Nobody was hurt, but at least one car was damaged.

There was other local flooding earlier Monday afternoon when the rains moved across southeastern areas.

A winter weather advisory remains in effect for the Berkshires.
