Woman Dies In Apartment Fire At Winchester Assisted Living Facility

WINCHESTER (AP) -- Fire officials say a 63-year-old woman has died after a fire at an assisted living center in Winchester.

Winchester Fire Chief John Nash says the woman died at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston on Wednesday afternoon, about six hours after the blaze in her apartment. Authorities haven't released her name.

Nash said on Thursday that the cause of the fire remains under investigation, but it appears to have been an accident. Officials say the woman suffered serious burns when her clothing caught on fire.

Authorities say the smoke alarm in the woman's apartment had been disabled, but hallway smoke alarms alerted people to the fire.

State Fire Marshal Stephen Coan says the woman's death was the 54th fire fatality in Massachusetts this year.
