Road Collapses In Wrentham After Car Strikes Fire Hydrant

WRENTHAM (CBS) -- A road collapse in Wrentham Monday afternoon caused significant traffic delays in the area.

The 20-foot hole on Route 140 between Madison and Thurston streets opened up after a car struck a fire hydrant, causing a water main break below the surface of the road, police said. It may have also caused a gas leak, according to police.

Officials said residents were in no immediate danger, but residents between Madison Street and Thurston Street, and people living in the Pond Home and Hidden Meadows neighborhood were asked to shelter in place.

Police asked that the public avoid the area entirely.

Crews were still working to repair the road late Monday night.
