What Days Are Best To Find Retail Bargains?
BOSTON (CBS) – As we start to think about holiday shopping, consumers might be surprised to learn there is a fairly simple way to make sure you are getting the best prices at the stores you love.
Most shoppers love a good bargain, and you might be surprised to learn how easy it is to make sure you are getting the best price and selection at the stores you love.
"Who doesn't love a bargain?," one shopper told us at the assembly square outlet malls.
The problem is dreams of saving big are often dashed when you get to the clearance rack, you find a great item, but they don't have the size or color you want. But what if you could be the first to that rack after the merchandise is marked down?
Kyle James of Ratherbeshopping.com discovered most retail chains have their markdowns on a regular schedule.
"By knowing the day, you can really go in and maximize your savings," he said.
MACY'S TUESDAYS
For example, if you like Macy's, you will want to shop on Tuesdays, according to James.
"They have their markdowns done by Monday close. The employee told me they will start on Sunday afternoon and Monday they will get them all done," James explained.
OLD NAVY WEDNESDAYS
At Old Navy, James found Wednesdays are best.
"They have to have their markdowns done by Tuesday afternoon, so come in Wednesday early and save some money," he said.
TARGET SELECT DAYS
According to James, Target cuts prices in different departments on different days of the week.
For example, Mondays are electronics, Tuesdays are women's clothing and Wednesdays are lawn and garden. Thursdays are housewares and Friday hardware.
JC PENNY, KOHL'S, GAP
James tracked markdowns at JC Penny and found prices are cut on the first and third Friday of the month. At Kohls, it's the second and fourth Saturdays and at the Gap markdowns are twice a month on Mondays.
James says these rules can vary from region to region, but anyone can find out when their favorite stores schedule their markdowns.
"The employees are very forthcoming with the information. I was very polite and I said, 'I noticed you don't have much on clearance, is there a better day when I can come in?'," James said.
