Keller @ Large: Mayor Menino, You're Doing Good

BOSTON (CBS) - Dear Mayor Menino:

I hear you're not doing well, but I thought it might cheer you up a bit to hear that you are doing good.

Really good.

In the more than five decades that I have lived here, I have never seen the city of Boston in better shape. The place is booming.

The Seaport District is unbelievable, absolutely packed every time I go down there with people heading to new jobs, new condos, new restaurants.

Remember when your critics used to cry about how you lacked a vision for that area? Now all they cry over is their inability to get a good table or find a parking space.

Over in Dudley Square, they're really coming along on the rehab of the old Ferdinand Furniture Building you started. They say we're just a few months away from opening up the new stores, offices and community space there.

You gotta stick around to see it, you can have a good laugh over all the folks who predicted Dudley would never come back.

Speaking of booming, I hardly recognize Boylston St. and Brookline Ave. down past Fenway Park. And pretty much every neighborhood commercial center is thriving.

I remember you telling me that was your dream, to have a city where families could live, work, shop and have a good time right in their own neighborhood without fear or blight.

And Tom, just look at how the new mayor, eager as he is to put his own stamp on things, is continuing so much of the Menino style and substance.

And when I saw the video of your family Thursday night, all the clips through the years showing them grow and thrive, I thought to myself, you're doing good, Mayor Menino. Really good.

And you'll be doing good around here for a long, long time to come.
