Flynn: Explosive Plays By Patriots Offense Helped Bury Buffalo

BOSTON (CBS) - Sports Hub personality and former NFL veteran Mike Flynn joined Toucher & Rich in studio Monday morning in the 7 o'clock hour talking Patriots, including his overall assessment of the game, the slew of injuries to key players and much more.

"The Patriots in the second half, offensively, pretty much dominated that game," said Flynn to start the conversation. That's two games in a row now where the offense has played well.

New England scored 24 second half points en route to a 37-22 victory in Buffalo, and what caught Flynn's eye in particular was the amount of explosive plays, something this team lacked earlier in the season.

Brandon LaFell has really come on as of late -- he had two touchdown receptions in Buffalo, one of them went for 56 yards.

The recently-activated Brian Tyms also had a long scoring play, a deep pass by Tom Brady that connected in the middle of the field for a 43-yard touchdown in the third quarter. Rob Gronkowski had a 33-yard reception, Julian Edelman had a 20-yarder, and when all was said and done the Pats had three players over 90 yards receiving.

Brady finished with four touchdowns on the day.

"The re-introduction of the explosive play was good to see, because now you can't sit on those underneath routes anymore if you're a defense. That to me was the story in that second half. You didn't run the ball particularly well, but they're a tough team to run against. The Patriots ran enough, which helps set up play action. They were physical, which helps the lineman," said Flynn. "That was the biggest thing; the explosive plays. We really haven't seen that."

If it happens one time you can chalk it up to luck, or a coincidence. But two great offensive games in a row now for the Patriots could mean the start of a trend, and Mike Flynn thinks they may have turned a corner in that regard.

"Tom Brady likes to spread the ball around. Ten different receivers caught balls yesterday, we haven't seen that either this season. We're seeing an evolution of the offense here. You run, you have a lot of play action; you also have heavy formations with three tight ends. With Tim Wright, now he's starting to get involved. It was good to see. It was a big jump from last week. I think they've righted the ship a little bit, and now they have confidence in what they want to accomplish offensively."

Flynn also touched on Jerod Mayo and Stevan Ridley leaving the game due to injuries, and what their loss would mean the rest of the way. All that and much more.
