MBTA Restores Weekend Service On 3 Commuter Rail Lines
BOSTON (AP) — The MBTA says it is restoring weekend service to three commuter rail lines because of customer demand.
Starting Dec. 27, Saturday and Sunday service will be restored to the Kingston/Plymouth and Greenbush lines, while Saturday service only will be restored to the Needham line.
All three lines serve areas to the south and southwest of Boston.
Weekend service on the lines was eliminated in 2012 due to a budget deficit at the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority.
State transportation Secretary Richard Davey says service restoration opens up more "transportation options and opportunity" for the communities on those lines.
The service restoration was made possible by the inclusion of funding in the state's latest budget.
