Patriots-Chiefs Monday Night Football Live Blog: Pats Fall To 2-2 With 41-14 Loss

BOSTON (CBS) -- Follow along for all the updates in the Patriots Monday Night Football showdown with the Kansas City Chiefs!

Final -- Chiefs 41, Patriots 14:

Thankfully, it's over. Now we get what should be a fun week as the Patriots prepare for the Cincinnati Bengals.

The worst loss by the Patriots under Bill Belichick is in the books, as they fall to 2-2 on the season with a 41-14 loss in Kansas City.

Nothing went right for the Patriots on either side of the ball. They managed just 290 yards of offense, while giving up 443 yards. Tom Brady looked like he was a rookie playing the Miami Dolphins in Miami, going 14-for-23 for 159 yards with two interceptions and a fumble. Darrelle Revis looked human on the defensive side of the ball, struggling to keep Dwayne Bowe in check.

This was just plain ugly by the Patriots, and they have a tough matchup on Sunday Night Football coming up in the Bengals.

We'll be breaking this one down throughout the night, and be sure to tune in to three hours of analysis on 98.5 The Sports Hub, and Patriots 5th Quarter on myTV38!

4th Quarter, 7:25 -- Chiefs 41, Patriots 14: Jimmy Garoppolo has his first career touchdown pass, and he can thank Rob Gronkowski.

The rookie QB hit his tight end over the middle, and Gronk looked like the Gronk of old, breaking a trio of tackles to fight his way into the end zone. It's good to see Gronk fighting for every yard, even with the game out of hand.

It was an overall solid drive for Garoppolo, who led the Patriots on an 81-yard drive in seven plays and 3:09. If he can do that six more times, then we'll really be in business.

The rookie couldn't even get any bench room after the play though, and had to sit on a Gatorade jug as Josh McDaniels went over the play with him. Brady also didn't seem like he was in any hurry to give the rookie some congrats.

4th Quarter, 10:34: And that will be the night for Tom Brady. Jimmy Garoppolo will be taking the snaps for the rest of this one.

At least it's something to watch for the rest of the game.

4th Quarter, 10:34 -- Chiefs 41, Patriots 7: It might be time for Jimmy G to make his NFL debut.

Brady was just picked off by Husain Abdullah on a terrible throw to Danny Amendola. Abdullah took it back 39 yards for the pick-six, and Brady took a hit on the return.

Rob Gronkowski was not on the field for this play. He played most of the first half, but hasn't been heard from in the second half. Then again, you can say the same for most of the New England offense.

4th Quarter, 11:52 -- Chiefs 34, Patriots 7: If it wasn't a rout before, it is now.

After Charles got the Chiefs down to the two, Smith hit Kelce on a play-action pass for his third touchdown toss of the night. Kelce now has eight catches on the night for 93 yards.

This night can't end soon enough for the Patriots.

End 3rd Quarter -- Chiefs 27, Patriots 7

Heading into the final 15 minutes of this one, the Chiefs have 387 yards of offense. The Patriots have 191, which is impressive given what they looked like in the first half. But then you remember it's the Patriots, and it's not so impressive.

The Chiefs have rushed for 183 yards on the ground, and that number could look even worse by the end of the game as Andy Reid hopes to chew some clock.

3rd Quarter, 3:26 -- Chiefs 27, Patriots 7

The Patriots offense has found the end zone. Finally.

After a nice 28-yard catch and run by Shane Vereen on third-and-four, Tom Brady hit Brandon LaFell for a 44-yard touchdown strike -- his first with the Patriots. He showed off some nice moves, breaking a few tackles en route to the end zone.

That ties the longest play by the Patriots on the season, matching Julian Edelman's 44-yard receptions in Weeks 1 and 2. It's also the first second half touchdown the team has scored this season, which is absolutely mind blowing.

It's not much, but it's some life by the New England offense.

3rd Quarter, 5:29 -- Chiefs 27, Patriots 0: The Chiefs only managed to get three points off the Brady pick.

Baby steps. Baby steps....

3rd Quarter, 7:03: It just keeps getting worse for the Patriots.

Brady went looking for Edelman on a deep route, but the receiver stopped running the route and Sean Smith came down with the easiest interception of his career. After not forcing a turnover in the firs three-and-a-half weeks of the season, the Chiefs now have two on the last two possessions.

Edelman was shaken up on the play as well, in case the pick wasn't ugly enough. He did walk off under his own power though, which may be the best news of the evening.

3rd Quarter, 7:53 -- Chiefs 24, Patriots 0: That didn't take long.

On the second play of the drive, Smith hit Charles out of the backfield, and Jerod Mayo couldn't catch up as the back took it in for the eight-yard score.

The Patriots are in shock on the sidelines. Nothing is going right on either side of the field for them tonight.

3rd Quarter, 8:38: Tamba Hali made Nate Solder look like a child, and stripped an unaware Tom Brady in the pocket. Hali fell on the ball at the New England nine-yard line, and the Chiefs are threatening to add to their already seemingly insurmountable lead.

That was the game's first turnover, and it could be very costly for New England.

3rd Quarter, 10:09: The Patriots finally got some pressure on Alex Smith, and the Chiefs are forced to punt their first possession of the half away.

After Charles picked up a first down on the ground on three straight runs, and Davis did the same with a 16-yard scamper, the D tightened up and stuffed the run. On third-and-six, Rob Ninkovich and Dont'a Hightower gave chase to Smith, who was forced to throw it away.

But the Chiefs special teams have also come to play -- though they haven't seen the field much in this one -- and set the Patriots up at their own one-yard line.

Brady and company have 99 yards to cover to find the end zone. They currently only have 97 total yards of offense.

3rd Quarter, 13:45: Malcolm Butler has replaced Logan Ryan at corner.

Not a very good night for anyone in the New England secondary so far, but Bill Belichick really let Ryan hear it after his penalty at the end of the first half.

3rd Quarter, 13:55: It's getting a little comical now. Though no one is really laughing at yet another three-and-out by the Patriots offense.

After hooking up with Edelman for four yards on first down, Brady couldn't connect with his favorite target downfield. On third down, Brady felt the pressure and started to scramble, but coughed the ball up high in the air. Three Chiefs were around the ball, and it looked like they'd come away with an easy takeaway, but the Patriots were able to pick it up to set up another Ryan Allen punt.

For what it's worth, Matthew Slater is having a great game on special teams.

Halftime: Chiefs 17, New England 0

It's just getting ugly now for the Patriots defense.

KC had eight seconds left after calling a timeout, facing a third-and-five. It looked like Andy Reid cost his team some points, after Darrelle Revis stopped Dwayne Bowe a yard shy of the end zone as time expired. But a hands to the face penalty on Logan Ryan gave the Chiefs an extra play with one second left, leading to three more points for Kansas City.

The story of the drive was more big plays for the Chiefs. Smith hit Kelce for 14-yards on a bubble screen on first down, and then hit Bowe on the next play for 33 yards.

Kelce is having his way with the New England defense, and after two more receptions on the latest drive is up to six for 75 yards. Bowe leads all receivers with five catches for 81 yards.

All of that means Alex Smith had a great first half, going 14-for-17 for 180 yards and a touchdown. The Chiefs have 303 total yards of offense already, and 17 first downs. The Patriots have just 96 yards, and five first downs.

Tom Brady finished the half 9-for-15 for 72 yards. Shane Vereen and Brandon LaFell both have three catches, with Ridley leading the way on the ground with 15 yards on three carries.

The Patriots were flat-out outplayed in the first half, on both offense and defense.

2nd Quarter, 2:24: Tom Brady could have ran for a first down on third-and-three, but fired a pass to Julian Edelman which the receiver couldn't hold on to. Instead of moving the chains, the Patriots punted for the fourth time tonight.

Brady did hit Gronk for a nice 19-yard hookup to start the drive, but all that gave them was their fifth first down of the game. They needed a sixth to keep the drive, and any hopes at putting points on the board before the half, alive, but came up short.

The Chiefs will now take over on their own 11-yard line with the two-minute warning looming.

2nd Quarter, 3:55: They were without Chandler Jones, but the Patriots D did force a punt on KC's last possession.

That wasn't without the Chiefs picked up another first down, but an illegal block penalty on Kelce led to a first-and-18, and the Patriots were able to keep KC from picking up enough yards.

The Patriots may be down by a pair of touchdowns, but a score here before the half could turn things around.

2nd Quarter, 5:30: More bad news for the Patriots.

Chandler Jones is currently being checked out by the team's medical staff on the sidelines. ESPN's Mike Reiss says it's either his right arm or shoulder.

2nd Quarter, 7:23: The Patriots picked up a pair of first downs, but still haven't found the end zone (or field goal range) and were forced to punt it away for the third time on the evening.

Brady is in Edelman/Gronkowski mode now with a 14-0 hole staring him in the face. He hit Edelman on the first two plays of the drive, both seven-yard pick ups, and went looking his way later on a second-and-eight (it went incomplete). He went looking for a double-teamed Gronkowski, who had Tamba Hali on him in coverage.

Brady did go to Danny Amendola on a third down, and the two connected on the play, but a flag on the Chiefs moved the chains for New England. It didn't matter though, as Brady's third-and-eight try to Brandon LaFell only went for six yards.

Another punt, and the Chiefs have the ball back at their own 20.

Chiefs fans did just reclaim the world record for being the loudest crowd, and given the way the scoreboard looks, you can't really blame them.

2nd Quarter, 10:58 -- Chiefs 14, Patriots 0: That escalated quickly.

The Chiefs needed just three plays to march 86 yards down the field. Kniles Davis broke a 48 yard run, Smith hit Kelce for a 33-yard catch-and-run to set KC up at the New England five-yard line, and Smith hit Charles with a screen and the back took care of the rest, putting the Chiefs on top 14-0.

Kansas City has as many touchdowns as the Patriots have first downs. That's not good. The Chiefs have 12 first downs in their first three drives.

2nd Quarter, 12:25: Brady and LaFell hooked up for another first down after the quarter break, a nice 14-yard reception on a third-and-four, but the drive stalled out and the Patriots were forced to punt it away again.

Shane Vereen's number was called on three straight plays, and the back couldn't pick up three yards after getting seven on a first down screen from Brady.

The Chiefs will take over at their own 14-yard line after a 28-yard boot by Ryan Allen.

End 1st Quarter -- Chiefs 7, Patriots 0:

No points, but the Patriots did manage to pick up a first down just before the quarter came to a close.

Brady hit Brandon LaFell for an eight-yard pickup on second-and-eight, and New England moved the chains for the first time. Ironically, LaFell was open because of a well executed screen.

He should take notes on how to do that without getting flagged.

The Pats will face a third-and-four when the second quarter gets underway.

1st Quarter, 2:24 -- Chiefs 7, Patriots 0: As good as the Patriots defense has looked in the first three weeks, they looked very porous on an 11-play, 73-yard touchdown drive by Kansas City.

Jamaal Charles had his way and Alex Smith picked on Darrelle Revis twice, and got the better of the Pro Bowl corner. Bowe beat Revis on a slant in the red zone for 15 yards to set the Chiefs up at the two-yard line, and Charles ran it in to give KC an early 7-0 lead.

It doesn't look like Smith is afraid to throw Revis' way at all, and Bowe is making the most of the matchup early on.

The Chiefs have run 20 plays so far in this one. The Patriots just three.

So much for that early lead...

1st Quarter, 8:22: We should be used to this by now.

Just another opening drive three-and-out by the Patriots to start this one. A screen to Shane Vereen picked up four yards on first down, but Brady was too deep for Julian Edelman downfield on second down and too short for Brandon LaFell on third down.

At least special teams captain Matthew Slater made a nice tackle on the punt, and the Chiefs will now take over on their own 27-yard line.

1st Quarter -- 9:16: It wasn't exactly pretty, but the Patriots defense did their job.

After stopping Charles on the first two plays of the game, Dwayne Bowe beat Darrelle Revis on a comeback route on 3rd-and-9 to move the chains.

Charles then picked up another first down with a nice 12 yard run, and picked up 16 yards on his first four carries of the game. The Chiefs picked up three first downs on their first possession, and looked to be moving the ball at will.

But Chandler Jones got to Alex Smith for a monster sack -- his third of the season -- forcing a 2nd-and-18. Smith couldn't connect with tight end Travis Kelce on second down, and he was forced to scramble for just nine yards on third-and-long.

The Patriots will now start at their own 10 after a nice punt by KC. We'll see how the rookie linemen protect the future Hall of Famer.

8:29 p.m: The Patriots won the toss and chose to defer. They'll get the ball to start the second half, so the Chiefs' offense will take the field first.

8:06 p.m.: It's already getting pretty loud at Arrowhead, so one can only imagine what it will be like come kickoff.

In his pregame interview on 98.5 The Sports Hub, Bill Belichick told Scott Zolak that two keys on offense are avoiding third downs and the receivers getting open quickly. All of that plays into the hostile environment the Patriots will be playing in tonight, but even more so in regards to Brady's protection on the line.

The Patriots offense is only converting 38.8 percent of their third downs, which is tied for 20th in the NFL.

And one quick attendance note. Jon Lester, who will start against the Kansas City Royals in the AL Wild Card game tomorrow, will be in the stands. The Patriots hooked Lester up with the tickets for tonight's tilt.

7:07 p.m.: The Patriots' inactives are out, and this time both Aaron Dobson and Kenbrell Thompkins are both inactive.

Thompkins had just one reception on one target last week against the Raiders, while Dobson was a healthy scratch. This is now the third time in four weeks that Dobson has been a healthy scratch for New England.

That makes it likely the running game and tight ends will have big roles for the Patriots in this one. Newcomer Tim Wright could see some extended time after having little to no role in the offense over the first three weeks.

Joining those two on the inactive list is offensive linemen Josh Kline and Jordan Devey, defensive linemen Zach Moore and Casey Walker, and corner Alfonzo Dennard.

For the Chiefs, running back Jamaal Charles is active and will give it a go while Pro Bowl safety Eric Berry will miss the game with a high ankle sprain.

Pregame -- 6:44 p.m.: All eyes will be on the Patriots and Chiefs tonight as they close out Week 4 of the NFL season.

This is a big game for both teams, though it means a little bit more to the 1-2 Chiefs than the 2-1 Patriots. But with doubters circling the wagons in New England, this is the kind of game where the Patriots can ease worries with a solid showing on national television.

It's been a slow start for the Patriots' offense due to some un-Tom Brady like play and struggles along the offensive line, and Bill Belichick will reportedly change things up a bit in hopes of combating a ferocious Kansas City pass rush this evening. Bryan Stork will reportedly start at center with fellow rookie Cameron Flemming getting the start at right guard, and Dan Connolly will be at left guard. Sebastian Vollmer and Nate Solder will take their normal spots at the two tackle positions.

Not only will the Patriots' linemen have sack-machines like linebacker Justin Houston (three sacks) and Tamba Hali (two sacks), but they'll have a rowdy Arrowhead crowd to deal with as well. KC fans will try to set the Guinness World Record for loudest crowd roar at an outdoor stadium, a record they originally set last year with a decibel level of 137.5 until it was broken by Seahawks fans. Tonight, they'll be measuring the decibel level at three different points in the game, so if it looks like the stadium is shaking on your TV, you know why.

That will make communication at the line -- verbal or non-verbal -- a premium for New England. It will be important for the Patriots to get an early lead to try and take the crowd out of this one.

We'll see if the change in protectors will help keep Brady upright and keep the pressure off the quarterback. Brady could be in for a big evening, as he's thrown 42 touchdowns passes and is 13-5 on Monday Night Football. He's also just 219 yards away from becoming the sixth player in NFL history to reach the 50,000 passing yard mark.

But we'll worry about all that fun stuff if or when Brady hits that mark. As for who won't be on the field, corner Alfonzo Dennard (who was probable on Saturday's injury report) will miss his third straight game, with Logan Ryan the likely candidate to start across from Darrelle Revis.

If you're up for it late tonight, 98.5 The Sports Hub and WBZ-TV will have all the postgame coverage you need. The Hub will have three full hours of analysis immediately following the game, and you can also see Bill Belichick and Tom Brady's press conferences live on WBZ-TV's Patriots 5th Quarter over on myTV38.
