Bruins Release Forward Ville Leino
BOSTON (CBS) -- On the same morning that he signed forward Reilly Smith and defenseman Torey Krug to one-year deal, Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli cleared some room on the roster by releasing veteran forward Ville Leino.
Leino, 30, had been invited to Bruins training camp on a tryout basis after his contract with Buffalo had been bought out back in June.
The former Red Wings, Flyers and Sabres winger scored 19 goals and had 34 assists in the 2010-11 season, but he's registered just 21 points in 66 games over the past two seasons. Last year with Buffalo, he scored zero goals in 58 games and finished the year with a minus-16 rating.
Leino signed a six-year, $27 million deal with Buffalo prior to the 2011-12 season.
The Bruins open their season on Oct. 8 at home against Philadelphia.
