Keller @ Large: Feedback On Lack Of Media Trust

BOSTON (CBS) – Yesterday, after commenting on a new Gallup poll showing trust in the news media falling to a historic low, I asked you for feedback on what the problem is and how it might be fixed.

And you responded with thoughtful feedback.

Sarah from Ipswich wrote: "The blurring of reporting and editorializing erodes the confidence of the public. Most members of any given audience would far prefer to have facts placed before them so that they may draw their own conclusion, or seek further information to assess for themselves."

Sarah, as a card-carrying analyst, I think there's value in that, but you're right, when the lines are blurred so you can't tell the news from the editorials, that's a problem.

Rich from Grafton complains about "lack of adversarial journalism. My head nearly exploded when we saw President Obama proclaim that the 'American worker was better off by any measure one can name.' Really? Not one journalist took issue with this."

So true Rich, when the media takes bogus spin on face value without challenge, it's embarrassing.

And Al from Needham hates it when we "don't give the WHOLE story. When watching the local evening news, I have to fill in my wife about the info they left out. And many times it would have given you a better perspective on the story. I know time is limited, but I would rather have fewer stories with more meat."

Duly noted Al.

And to everyone, please, keep the feedback coming. If we don't serve you properly, we won't survive, so letting us know what you love and hate about what we do is the greatest service you could ever provide.
