Gresh & Zo's 2014 NFL Summer School: San Francisco 49ers

BOSTON (CBS) - It's not your typical classroom. They're not your typical teachers. It's where you go after failing all year. It's Gresh and Zo's NFL Summer School on 98.5 The Sports Hub!

The summer school rolls on and heads to the Bay Area, where Andy Gresh and Scott Zolak break down and preview the 2014 San Francisco 49ers.

Taking Attendance:

The 49ers re-signed wide receiver Anquan Boldin and kicker Phil Dawson and added veteran receive Stevie Johnson in a trade with the Bills. They also drafted running back Carlos Hyde out of Ohio State in the second round. They also brought in safety Antoine Bethea. Donte Whitner and Terrell Brown both left via free agency.

Gresh: "You don't want to take a step backwards, but right now the 49ers are kind of turning over their roster and going through some changes. You're paying your quarterback real money now, and are they going to be able to maintain the same level of consistency as they get younger? They still have to make Vernon Davis whole. Alex Boone is holding out. On the field they're gonna be okay because I trust Jim Harbaugh and what he's put in place, but the bigger issue with that organization seems to be external, contractual and age-related."

Zo: "You don't have Aldon Smith. You don't have Navarro Bowman. I think the Stevie Johnson signing is a really good pick up for them. Kaepernick got his money. I like Carlos Hyde. Offensively they should be okay. Defensively they used to be that 'knock your you know what' in the dirt, and that's the area of the defense where Seattle has it now all over San Francisco."

Pop Quiz:

Can the 49ers win a Super Bowl with Kaepernick at quarterback?

Gresh: "I don't know. I really don't. I don't know if there's five minutes to go, and you need to go 80 yards, if Kaepernick can win it with his arm."

Zo: "The answer is no. I don't think they can win a Super Bowl with him at quarterback."

Fantasy 101:

Can Frank Gore still be a top fantasy back?

Gresh: "I think this is the year he falls off. I think they start to move and phase him out of the offense a little bit. I can't trust him to be a top 10 guy."

Who has the most value in the receiving core?

Gresh: "Can I say Vernon Davis? Because I think it's him. He's the constant. Michael Crabtree is great, I think there will be a resurgence with Stevie Johnson, but Vernon Davis is special. He's elite."

Zo: "Vernon Davis because he went to Maryland."

Final Grade:

Last year's 49ers went 12-4. Year before that? 11-4-1. Vegas has set the over/under at 10.5 wins. Where do they finish and do they make the playoffs?

Gresh: "They're going over and they're making the playoffs. The question is whether they're the no. 1 seed or the no. 5 seed."

Zo: "I can see them getting off to a slow start then finding their way. I don't believe in the quarterback. I have them going 10-6, which is not a bad year."
