WATERTOWN (CBS) – Some Watertown businesses are without power and a young mother is shaken up after a pair of utility poles came down without warning.

The woman and her baby were sitting in a nearby car and narrowly missed being hit by the poles that crashed down on Calvin Road about 11 a.m.

No one was hurt but power was cut off to 12 buildings in the area when a transformer came down with the poles.

Tom Gilarde, who runs a printing company in the area, told WBZ-TV’s Paul Burton he spoke to the mother who was quite shaken up.

“There was a woman, it turns out, sitting in her vehicle maybe about 10 feet in front of that when it came down,” Gilarde said.

“She was obviously very concerned, she had a baby in the back seat. So she was a little bit shocked that she had been sitting there when it came down. “

Adrian Denis works at the nearby Danish Pastry House and watched the poles crash to the ground.

“When I turned around I just saw everything coming down at the same time, the two poles,” Denis said. “It was just crazy.”

NStar and Verizon crews and Watertown fire officials spent much of the day at the scene and determined that the poles collapsed because they were old and rotted out in the middle.
