15 Boston Sports Figures Who Have Taken Ice Bucket Challenge

BOSTON (CBS) -- It seems as though nearly everyone has taken part in the "Ice Bucket Challenge," dumping a bucket of ice water over their head to raise awareness for ALS.

People around the country have been taking the icy plunge and sending in donations thanks to former Boston College baseball captain Pete Frates, who has been battling ALS the last few years. The amount of support Frates' challenge has received over social media has been outstanding, with athletes, politicians and Hollywood stars joining the cause.

According to the ALS Association, upwards of $4 million has been raised nationwide since July 29.

The Boston sports teams have done their share to spread awareness, and douse themselves with some ice water. Here are a handful of Boston sports figures who have done their part:

The BC Connection

BC head football coach Steve Addazio:

It all started at Boston College, so it was very fitting that the new football coach made a point to take part in all the fun. Addazio did his "Ice Bucket Challenge" at the conclusion of the team's media day, doing it in memory of former BC assistant AD Dick Kelly who lost his battle with ALS in February, and in honor of Frates. He challenged all the media members in attendance to do the same.

Former BC Quarterback, Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan:

The former Eagles QB, commonly known as "Matty Ice," was one of the first to do the challenge.

All At Once

The New England Patriots

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick was first challenged by 98.5 The Sports Hub's Toucher & Rich, and then Belichick and owner Robert Kraft were challenged by New York Giants president John Mara. Instead of the two head honchos of the Patriots doing it themselves, they turned it into a team experience after their joint practice with the Philadelphia Eagles at Gillette Stadium on Tuesday.

It was a great opportunity for some players to douse their head coach with a bucket of ice water -- hopefully practice for another one come February.

Ice Bucket Challenge Hits The Ice

While the Patriots did the challenge as a team, the Bruins have been issuing the challenge to each other over their offseason. It all started with Gregory Campbell:

Tek Takes The Challenge

The "Ice Bucket Challenge" doesn't appear to be losing any steam either, so expect even more vidoes to hit social media (and donations to pour in) in the near future.
