KENNEBUNK, MAINE (CBS) -- Police say they've made an arrest after residents reported a weird and creepy mystery on their hands in Southern Maine.

Someone was leaving bizarre notes in residents' mailboxes warning them that their children may be in danger. Each note is signed "Pervert." Police say two notes were left in Kennebunk mailboxes and another was left in a mailbox in Arundel.

The notes read: "I will not stay away from your kids. Your friend, Pervert."

"You've got somebody lingering around the bush hiding and putting notes in your mailboxes waiting for your kids to come out. Gadzooks, that's crazy," said Ginger Nadeau, a Kennebunk resident.

The suspect, Robert Simkowitz, 39, of Old Orchard Beach, Maine was arrested on Wednesday and charged with two misdemeanor counts of criminal threatening.

According to police, Simkowitz is not a registered sex offender. It's not believed that he knew the victims.

Tips from the public led police to Simkowitz after security cameras owned by Eric and Dianne Falconer captured an image of a suspicious man dropping a letter in a mailbox. It was believed to be the suspect writing the notes.

The Falconers don't have young kids, but the message still freaks them out.

"I just had the goosebumps everywhere," said Dianne. "No matter how old your children get you still worry about them."
