Suspected Burglar Finds SUV Boxed In By NH Homeowner's Car

BELMONT, NH (CBS) – A suspected burglar is facing a number of charges after the homeowners showed up while he was still in the house on Friday afternoon.

Police say Robert Martel, 30, of Franklin, New Hampshire had parked his SUV in the driveway of the home on Cross Street in Belmont, New Hampshire.

The elderly couple who lived there pulled their car in behind the SUV, and not realizing their home was being burglarized, they went inside.

Police say the elderly man found Martel in the bedroom holding a pillow case full of jewelry, and yelled to his wife to call 911.

The burglar took off for the driveway, only to find his SUV boxed in and the homeowner following him.

Officials say Martel managed to steal the couple's car after a brief struggle with the man who lived there.

The homeowner suffered a hand injury during that struggle.

Responding officers were able to track down the car quickly, and several cruisers stopped Martel on I-93 near the Exit 19 ramp.

Martel was charged with Felony Burglary and Felony Motor Vehicle Theft.

Police say they recovered the jewelry that was taken from the home.
