Phantom Gourmet: Coconut Water Taste Test

BOSTON (CBS) --- Phantom recently purchased four bottles of coconut water from a local supermarket. The refreshing contenders were Goya, One, Vita Coco and Zico.

One Coconut Water finished at the bottle of the bunch. The shiny blue package may be eye-catching, but what's inside is truly forgettable. This slightly cloudy liquid has such mild flavor, Phantom thought it tasted more like plain old water than actual coconut water.

Next up was Vita Coco. With attractive tropical packaging and plenty of distribution, this brand has probably caught your eye at the supermarket. If you haven't tried it before, you may be shocked by the yellowish color and somewhat yeasty aroma. When it comes to taste, this water goes down smoothly with just a hint of sweetness.

The runner-up is Goya. Phantom popped the top on this long, tall, aluminum can and was shocked at what came out, as white chunks of real coconut are mixed in with this clear liquid. While off-putting at first, the pulp actually provides a nice counterbalance to this very sweet drink. Unfortunately, Goya is only 89-percent juice and contains a lot of sugar.

At the top of the food chain is Zico. With coconuts sourced from Thailand, this brand delivered a cloudy, coconut water that tasted a little thicker than the competitors. Slightly sweet with a touch of saltiness, this brand is a good choice if you're looking to replenish after a workout, or if you're just looking for a little variety. That's why Zico Coconut Water is at the top of the food chain.
