Traffic Delays As Weekend Work Begins On Prudential Tunnel Ceiling

BOSTON (CBS) - Work began Saturday to replace the ceiling inside the Prudential Center tunnel on the Massachusetts Turnpike.

Eight lanes merged down to only two as construction crews removed part of the 50-year-old concrete ceiling.

"Over the past few years we've begun to see signs of deterioration in that ceiling so it needs to come down" said Jim Rooney, the Executive Director of Massachusetts Convention Center Authority.

Some drivers forgot about the project Saturday and found themselves stuck in an assembly line of cars all getting diverted as several ramps were closed.

The entire project will last for about four weekends.

The closures begin on Fridays around 9 p.m. and last until 5 a.m. Monday.

However, work will be put on hold and the tunnel will be completely open during the two weekends before the Boston Marathon.

The next three weekends of work will be March 28, April 4 and April 25.

More details are available on the project website.
