The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education is reviewing a company that wants to open the second virtual school in Massachusetts.

The Massachusetts Connections Academy of Learning Excellence is the only organization to apply this year. It hopes to enroll 1,500 students to start, with 6,000 by its fifth year of operation.

A public hearing on the application is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the Department's offices in Malden.

One other virtual school is already operating in Massachusetts. State law allows up to three licenses.

Would you enroll your children in a virtual school? Or do you think these programs do not replace in-person contact with a teacher? Leave your comments below.
