BOSTON (CBS) - New detour maps have been released for drivers to use when the Callahan Tunnel closes for a two-and-a-half-month rehabilitation project.

The tunnel will close December 27 until March 12, 2014.

Detailed detour information from points south and north are available on theMassachusetts Department of Transportation website.

MassDOT says improvements have been made to traffic signal timing along detour routes as-needed to avoid backups. Traffic engineers and police will monitor busy intersections.

The website also includes trip planning tools during the duration of the closure.

The proposed work schedule includes an additional four to five months of overnight closures between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.once the tunnel reopens in March.

MassDOT says the complete closure will reduce the overall duration of the project, provide enhanced public safety by minimizing changes to traffic flow, and better coordinate with other local projects including Tobin Bridge work, which is scheduled to resume in spring 2014.
