Jared Remy Denies Murdering Girlfriend Jennifer Martel In Jailhouse Interview

NORTH BILLERICA (CBS) -- In a recent jailhouse interview, Jared Remy said he did not kill his girlfriend, Jennifer Martel.

With Remy set to appear before a judge this week on murder charges, he granted an interview to a Boston Herald reporter.

The son of Red Sox broadcaster Jerry Remy did not give any details about his defense but said he is not guilty of murder.

"No. That's ridiculous," he said when asked whether he killed Martel. "How dumb would I have to be? I loved her. I still love her."

The interview was conducted at the Middlesex County jail, with Remy and the Herald reporter speaking over a phone and separated by glass.

The night of Aug. 15, one of Remy's neighbors saw him at the scene of the homicide and tried to intervene when Martel was brutally attacked and killed, the police have said.

But Remy is already talking about life outside of jail, telling the Herald, "I know my life is going to suck when I get out of here," he said.

When asked whether he was on steroids at the time of his arrest, Remy said, "no."

Martel was the mother of Remy's 5-year-old daughter, Ariana, who is in state custody.

Remy told the Herald that he hasn't made contact with his daughter since his arrest.

"If she chooses to know me at some point and wants to see me, that's fine. If she doesn't, that's fine, too," he said. "I just want her to be happy. I love her."

Jerry Remy and his wife have petitioned for custody of Ariana, and so has the Martel family, Jared Remy told the Herald, adding he would prefer that his parents gain custody because of their financial means.

Jennifer Martel's mother, Patty, had no comment about the case when WBZ-TV reached her Monday morning.
