Mark Cuban Casts An Eye Toward A Cambridge Start-Up

CAMBRIDGE (CBS) - A Cambridge start-up launched by a group of Harvard Business School students has attracted the attention of one of the best known investors in the country - Mark Cuban.

The students have raised $750,000 for Hourly Nerd, a web site that connects available freelance jobs with students.

Cambridge Start-Up Catches Eye Of Mark Cuban

Hourly Nerd co-founder Peter Maglathian tells me they had thought about trying to get on the ABC show "Shark Tank," which Cuban appears on.

"We had heard that Mark was very receptive to inbound emails in the past, so we just decided on a whim to shoot him a brief note saying 'Hey Mark, we're four HBS guys entering our second year, here's our concept.' He actually got back to us in 10-15 minutes."

Maglathian calls Cuban's investment in their business plan a seal of approval.

"It's incredibly important," he says. "Having someone like Mark Cuban, who is a seasoned investor, a guy who knows this business very, very well, should help propel us to the next level."

Maglathian says Hourly Nerd has launched a redesigned web site and it's growing quickly.

"We now know it's for real," he says.
