Water Main Break Permanently Shuts Down Quincy YMCA's Building

QUINCY (CBS) - The management of the Quincy YMCA says it had no choice but to shut its doors after a water main break flooded its old building.

The break sent thousands of gallons of water gushing into the basement, destroying all of its electrical and ventilation systems.

The building has been a staple in the community for decades.

"Everything was shot and the building inspector said we couldn't open it up, and we didn't want to anyway," CEO Paul Gorman said.

Some members, like 86-year-old Micky Rosen are finding out their work out place is shut down. Rosen has been a member for more than 20 years.

"It's very surprising. I was shocked because it's never been closed in all the years I've been coming," Rosen said.

Although the shutdown impacts their budget, the YMCA says there is a plan to reimburse all of its members.

"It's challenging. Memberships charges for September have been refunded. All of our programs in the Fall will be refunded," Executive Director Eric Snyder said.

Folks at the YMCA say there is some light and hope at the end of this dark road.

Right next door, the YMCA is in the process of completing a brand new state-of-the-art $30 million facility that includes classrooms, field house and track.

"It's about 120,000 square feet, two large pools and new health and wellness center," Gorman said. "We didn't expect this to happen. And we don't want to lose any of our members before we go into the new place. We are still fundraising now."

And they are asking members like Micky for patience and help.

"I've adapted all my life and I will adapt to this. And the new place looks beautiful. Everyone will love it," Rosen said.

The new facility is expected to open at the end of October.
