Driver Arrested In Fatal Wrong-Way Mass Pike Crash

CHARLTON (CBS) -- Police have arrested a man they say drove the wrong way on the Massachusetts Turnpike, creating a multi-vehicle crash and killing another driver.

State Police received a report from a toll collector, that a car was headed eastbound on the Mass Pike, in the westbound lanes.

As police started closing the Mass Pike, east of the driver's location to prevent a crash, they received a report of a crash involving multiple vehicles and one car on fire.

The crash happened between Exit 10 and the Charlton State Police Barracks.

A 66-year-old woman from Toms River, N.J. was found dead at the scene.

The wrong-way driver, a 33-year-old Leominster man, was arrested and taken to UMass Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

Police have not released the driver's name.

Police say at least one other person was taken to a nearby hospital with injuries, as well.

The westbound lanes of the Mass Pike were closed until about 9 a.m. Sunday.
