'Halloween' Emergency Train Drill Scheduled For Sunday In Salem

SALEM, Mass. (AP) — The Massachusetts city famous for the Witch Trials of 1692 is bracing itself for an influx of emergency workers.

Public safety officials will respond to Salem on Sunday for a simulated emergency aboard a commuter rail train. The scenario will involve the evacuation of a train filled with costumed passengers on Halloween — the busiest tourist day of the year in Salem.

The drill is being conducted by the MBTA, state transportation department as well as and local police and fire officials.

The exercise will take place in a "tunnel environment" at the commuter rail station and is designed to help first responders prepare for an actual emergency, including the treatment of injured passengers at the scene.

The Federal Transit Administration requires local agencies to conduct periodic drills.
